Music in LeedsLeeds is the home of the Northern Ballet Theatre, The West Yorkshire Playhouse which is one of the city's greatest modern institutions, and the Opera North. The Grand Theatre stages the Opera and the Northern Ballet Company performs here. The Millennium Square was opened recently by Nelson Mandela, which will host many concerts and performances from popular artists from around the world. If it is the big names and stars you want to hear, find out who is playing at the Met or at the Cockpit. Also the up and coming local talent play at the Josephs Well venue. Pubs with live music are the Grove Inn, The Royal Park Cellars, The Fenton, which host some great bands for you to listen to. There is a month long Summer festival in the heart of the city during July and August and it is called Rhythms of the City, which has lots of different music from around the world. For something a little different, one can learn to play music at the Trade for Change, where you can play large African Drums, or why not learn to dance to the Salsa at the Boston Exchange. There is also Salsa and Tango lessons at the Wardrobe on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Northern School of Dance will train you to become the next Torvil and Deane, and on Wednesdays they teach the Afro Caribbean dance which sounds like great fun, and the Irish centre which hosts many concerts is a very popular venue for the performing arts. Temple Newsam House is surrounded by 1200 acres of parkland and is a great venue during the Summer months for Opera in the Park. This house was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots husband, Lord Darnley. The house was remodeled several times and portrays several eras of architecture.
